Best hike in Cape Town: Lion’s Head
Cape Town is one of the most stunning cities that I have been to. Close to some amazing hiking and national parks, there is plenty to do even for a month long visit. One of my favorite things to do is to go for a sunset hike to Lion’s head. At 2000 ft. + elevation, Lion’s Head has dramatic views overlooking the city of Cape Town.
Not a walk in the park
But it is definitely not a walk in the park. You will be scrambling and climbing a few small sections of ladders. If you are generally fit and have no acrophobia, this is absolutely manageable independently. In case you are on the fence, there are local guides you can find on AirBnB experiences or find an organized hike on TripAdvisor or something similar. To spice-up the hike, carry a bottle of MCC with you to celebrate and soak in the amazing sunset views of the city. It’s absolutely worth it!

How long is the hike?
You can catch a taxi to the trailhead, which is about 30 mins, depending on where you are in the city. The hike itself is around 7-8 miles i.e. 10-12 kms. roundtrip, and expect it to take 3-4 hours. The hike starts with a very gradual incline but gets really steep as you approach the summit. If you have fear of heights, this may not be an ideal hike, as there are a few sections with steep drops. Make sure you wear good shoes – this is definitely not a let-me-go-in-slippers hike!
It gets incredibly busy during sunset, but if you are comfortable hiking in the dark stay back until after the sunset. On a clear day, you are sure to be rewarded with some amazing post-dusk hues. Carry a headlamp, plenty of water, and a bottle of MCC along with a little picnic, and you should have an absolute blast on this hike.
