Wading through Oman’s incredible wadis
At the surface level, Oman may seem like another gulf country with unbearably hot summers, dry desert landscape and lots of oil reserves. While that is true, I was positively surprised to discover the other side of Oman – one filled with verdant wadis (aka valleys) , nourished by turquoise water tumbling down the steep slopes. This is the Oman where rock pools, hidden waterfalls and canyons create a playground for the adventurers
Getting to these wadis is part of the fun, with some of them requiring a 4×4 given the steep terrain. Here are my 3 favorite wadis which you can visit on a day trip from Muscat or Sur.
Most diverse: Wadi Shab
Easily accessible on a day trip from Muscat, Wadi Shab is a popular destination for the locals and visitors alike, but that doesn’t take away from the sheer beauty of this wadi. Best of all, you don’t need a 4×4 for this one. Once you get to the parking lot, you would need take a short boat ride (for 1 Omani Rial) to cross the stream and start an hour-long, relatively flat hike. The combination of hiking, swimming and a short boat trip makes it a great choice for families as well. The deeper you go into the valley, more beautiful it gets but anywhere is beautiful.
Most adventurous: Wadi Mipam
Favorite of all the wadis I visited during my stay, Mipam is part of the Tiwi corridor. For navigation using Google Maps, it’s best if you use Wadi Tiwi, and you will start seeing signs for Wadi Mipam. This definitely needs a 4×4 if you plan to go all the way to the trailhead. Alternatively, you can go as far as your car allows, and then hike the rest of the way. Its a popular spot for waterfall rappeling and basic canyoneering – and most folks end up joining one of the various tours from Muscat. Beautiful rock pools and waterfalls to swim in.
Easiest access: Wadi Bani Khalid
Don’t let the easy access to this wadi fool you. Yes, it can get crowded during the weekend afternoons, but if you time it right, you may have the pools all to yourself. Gentle pools and waterfalls, and comfortable warm water would make you want to take it slow here, so bring your picnic. If you are feeling a little adventurous, visit the cave pools which are a short hike away. Grab a snack or a drink at the coffee shop afterward.
